NGĀ MIHI

Since Te Kawaunui Trust was established in 1980, Muri, Tiwi, Kohi, Dan, Sonny, Aroha, Tui, LeeAnne, Aubrey, Tana B and Morgan have served as trustees. As a large whanau, we are dynamic, skillful, and talented thanks to being raised with an enduring legacy provided by our tupuna Nanna Hetet, Nanna Hurahanga, Tana and Digger Te Kanawa. We now have a responsibility to ensure this legacy of whenua, whare tupuna and raranga matauranga exists for mokopuna to come.

BECOME A TRUSTEE

Te Kawaunui Trust seeks whanau who are keen to give back as trustees. Nine of the 12 siblings have either served or are serving as trustees. We are a four-generation whanau and welcome interest from anyone wanting to become a trustee. Current trustees encourage attendance of whanau at online Trust hui which occurs every six weeks for 1.5 hours. At Trust hui, we typically discuss the feasible management of our land, homestead and bach rental properties, maize cropping, grazing, online bookstore/sales, and any other opportunities that may arise, as well as maintenance issues for the homestead and urupa . Most importantly, whanau ora - our whanau well-being is recorded n the minutes as the number one agenda item. There is also an opportunity to learn how to use the Cloud Accounting programme XERO, website design and to manage our online shop in Squarespace.

WHANAU REGULAR GIVING

For some whanau, regular giving by automatic payments has been a constant contribution to the Trust Income since it was established. However, in 2020, the Trust opened a separate account to ensure whanau contributions would not be used for operational expenses like rates, insurance etc, but an account that could be considered for innovation and aspirational purposes.

If the KOHA account is something you would like to contribute to, the account is 02 0448 0038832 066 Te Kawaunui Trust.

Ngā mihi to regular givers. Dan & Marleina Te Kanawa, Missy and Che Wilson, Sonny Te Kanawa, Clowdy, Tana & Ariana, Ata, Kahu, LeeAnne and Mike Daniels, Sonny & Pam Te Kanawa, Graem and Shona Te Kanawa , Tui Davis. In Australia, Pia Davis.

  • Ata Te Kanawa

Ata is committed to ensuring the Trust is in great shape for future trustees and ultimately all current and future beneficiaries. Trust hui is a great way to touch base on whanau matters and work toward making our whanau asset thrive. CHAIR

  • Mahina Te Kanawa

During the many years living away from home, Mahina always kept an eye on what’s happening at home with the whanau, land and homestead. As a trustee, Mahina contributes regularly to hui and keeps everyone in the loop with the latest happenings in his Aussie-based whanau.

  • Kahu Te Kanawa

Kahu is our ‘go to’ expert on all things raranga and a reliable source of matauranga Māori. Having been a lecturer, artist and tutor, Kahu has now completed her PhD and works as an Associate Curator-Māori at Auckland Museum .Kahu proactively seeks opportunities for the benefit of whanau.

    TREASURER

  • Pia Davis

Pia has been the Trust Rockstar who has singlehandedly ensured the trust administration is all up to date and online systems are in place for the trust to ensure it is compliant and all trustees have oversight on financial matters. Pia’s Melbourne base has not meant a hindrance to her ongoing term as a dedicated trustee.

    ADMIN SUPPORT

  • Clowdy Ngatai

Te Kuiti based Clowdy has been our home trustee who is reliable and action-focused. Although Clowdy considered reigning to have more time to complete a kakahu she has been working on, her willingness to stay on the trust is admirable and very typical of Clowdy’s generosity and commitment to whanau.

    SECRETARY

  • Graem Te Kanawa

Te Puke-based Graem, along with his wife Shona has always been interested in the well-being of the whanau. Graem is a great example of sitting in on trust hui before committing to becoming a trustee which availed himself to be a trustee in March 2023.,
